Lose Shootout in Mt. Forest; Good Effort in Walkerton; Frustrating Loss to Kincardine
The Sailors got a good effort Saturday but came away with only one point to show for it in a 5-4 shootout loss in Mount Forest.
Brett McGuinness fired a hat-trick -- his first two goals with the man-advantage, the other unassisted.
Tyler Million’s marker from Chad Woodhouse gave the Sailors a 3-1 lead before the half-way mark of the second period.
Jamie Miller and Brandon Dykxhoorn assisted on McGuinness’s first goal, while Ben Sloetjes set up McGuinness’s second tally on the night.
The Sailors appeared headed for victory when the Patriots squared the score at 4-4 with less than two minutes left in regulation.
Netminder Sheldon Reid made 43 saves in the loss.
The loss drops the Sailors into last place with 10 points, one back of the Patriots.
A spirited game in Walkerton Friday saw the Sailors drop a 5-2 verdict to the Hawks despite being outshot 48-25
Brett Phillips and Grant Alton set up Sloetjes for the Sailors first goal on the power-play late in the second period to cut Walkerton’s lead to 3-1, and Ben Gowing took the feed from Tyler Durst to finish the scoring at 10:26 of the third.
Mount Forest gained a point in a 6-5 overtime loss in Kincardine Friday.
The Sailors’ most recent home game on January 4th saw the good guys absorb a 5-0 shutout at the hands of the Kincardine Bulldogs on 104.9 the Beach night.
Kincardine built up a 3-0 lead through 20 minutes of play and a added their other two goals in the second.
The Sailors worked feverishly to ruin Kincardine goaltender Brian Hainsworth’s shutout bid late in the third when Kincardine was called for three minor penalties within 29 seconds with less than two minutes to go in regulation time.
The Sailors take to home-ice against the Mitchell Hawks at MRC Saturday at 8pm.
A pre-game ceremony will honour McDonald’s employees from Goderich and Exeter who have been selected to help staff McDonald’s facilities in Vancouver and Whistler during next month’s Olympic Games.
