A Night of Firsts
Submitted By Sailors Staff on Friday, February 05, 2010
For the first time since 2003, the Sailors defeated the Kincardine Bulldogs in regulation by a score of 3-1 on Friday night. This comes only days after
Brett McGuinness was the first Sailors player ever to receive the league's player of the month, for his strong play throughout January. The win was the first road victory for the team this season, and the first win since November 20, and therefore the first win in 2010. The eventual game-winning goal was the first short-handed tally of the season.
Sheldon Reid was stellar in goal for the Sailors, stopping 42 of 43 shots. After trailing the Bulldogs 1-0 after the first period,
Scott Miller opened the scoring for Goderich with 6:57 remaining in the second on a nice feed from
Brandon Dykxhoorn. With just under two minutes left in the period,
Jamie Miller scored short-handed what turned out to be the game winner.
Brendan Thomson then added an empty-netter with a dozen seconds remaining in the game, with Jamie Miller getting the assist.
The win was not all good news, however, as Dykxhoorn left the game mid-way through the third period with a lower-body injury. His status is doubtful for the Sailors next game versus Walkerton on Saturday night.
