Sailors close scoring gap, come up short against Bulldogs, Hawks

Tyler Million scored the only power play goal for either team Friday night at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, as the Goderich Junior 'C' Sailors took a low-scoring, low-penalty loss to the Bulldogs, 4-1.

Assisting Million in his efforts were Dean Reynolds and Tyler Dorscht.

The goal came after Kincardine's Dave Culliton was sent to the box in the opening minutes of the second for cross-checking, and was one of eight Sailor attempts on the power play.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, saw Jed Ironmonger bookend the game with lone goals in the first and third periods, assisted by Brett Parsons and Shawn Stewart respectively.

Goderich goaltender Sheldon Reid made 28 saves for the night, while Kincardine's Gatlin Burt stopped 29. Despite the score, attempts on net were close for both teams. Goderich took 30 shots to Kincardine's 32.

Tyler Durst earned six of 10 Sailor penalty minutes, while Kincardine spent 16 minutes on eight infractions.

Back at home Saturday night, the Sailors hit the ice against Mitchell determined not to endure the same 9-0 punishment they received last time from the Hawks.

Brett Austin rallied back with less than one minute left to make the final score 2-1 Mitchell. He was assisted by Brett McGuinness.

The Hawks had persistent offence, and Sailors goalie Shawn Gethke made 41 saves for the night. Mitchell's Josh Nurse fielded a total of 22 shots.

The Hawks cashed in on one of eight power plays, while the Sailors came up short with the extra man on.

The Sailors have back-to-back home games this week, hosting Kincardine Friday night and Wingham on Saturday. Game times are 8:30 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday. Both games are at the Maitland Recreation Centre.
